This year’s festival is a Mountain Medley of authors and genres, sure to please everyone who loves books and writing. Author talks and readings, lunch with an author, and workshops for writers are among the events. 2019’s featured authors include: Diane Chamberlain, Beth Macy, NC Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green, Ronni Lundy, Georgann Eubanks, PT Deuterman, Anna Jean Mayhew, Alan Michael Parker, Stephanie Powell Watts, and Ashe County Library Writer-in-Residence Robert Gipe. It provides an opportunity for authors to share their work and themselves with readers. It gives readers a chance to rub elbows with the authors who take them on journeys through their writing. It offers writers a chance to be inspired and to practice their craft. It offers writers a chance to attend instructive and hands-on workshops. It is a special time in the mountains of North Carolina for lovers of the written word. Each year, the On the Same Page Festival takes on a unique theme and flavor. The theme is planned and intentional and provides a thread that is woven throughout the festival. The flavor is organic, developing naturally from the combination of people and special events that are part of the festival, as well as the spirit of the mountain community in which it is held. Readings, writing workshops, discussions, visual art, performance art, film, spoken word, craft, food, and more blend together each year to become the special experience that is On the Same Page.

John went on the road as a pro at 16 with the group Chanting House which he formed with Susan McKeown and which eventually included such great players as Seamus Egan, Eileen Ivers, & Donogh Hennessy. John went on to form the highly acclaimed super group, Solas, with Seamus Egan, John Williams, Karan Casey and Winifred Horan, which took the folk and Celtic music worlds by storm, in no small part due to John’s powerhouse rhythmic guitar style and innovative arrangements. As a member of Solas, John performed to sold out audiences nationally and internationally as well as appearing on many national TV and radio programs: NBC’s The Today Show, various programs for National Public Radio and Public Radio International, A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, E-Town and World Cafe as part of that critically acclaimed group, he also received three NAIRD awards and a Grammy nomination for the band’s self-titled first recording. After leaving Solas, John has gone on to perform and tour with other greats in the Folk, Celtic and Bluegrass worlds – as music director for folk icon Joan Baez, guitarist for Mary Chapin Carpenter, Eileen Ivers, Tim O’Brien (John was included on Tim’s 2006 Grammy-award winning CD, Fiddler’s Green), Linda Thompson, Kate Rusby, Cathie Ryan, Cherish the Ladies, and many others. He has appeared on soundtracks for the feature film, The Brothers McMullan, Soldier, PBS’s Out of Ireland and also composed the music for the film Uncle Robert’s Footsteps and the play Down the Flats as well as performing on countless recordings as guitarist and/or singer for other notable artists such as Kate Rusby, Linda Thom

Patrick Crouch, Ron Shuffler, and Kay Crouch have a unique blend of brilliant vocal harmonies and solid instrumental foundation. They are dedicated to performing a variety of musical styles in an acoustic setting. Their eclectic repertoire includes modern folk songs by American, Canadian, and Irish songwriters, the fiery breakdowns and songs of family and home found in both traditional and contemporary bluegrass settings, and centuries-old Celtic airs and dance tunes. All of this is peppered with a healthy dose of popular jazz standards, swing and western swing music, and a few classic country tunes thrown in to provide a program certain to be enjoyed by all. Patrick is a former band director and Kay a teacher in the music department at Caldwell Community College. Ron Shuffler is one of NC’s most outstanding bass players, having been a part of the soundtrack for “O Brother Where Art Thou?”
